How can you tell if olive oil has gone bad? Mine has a very pungent smell to it and I am afraid to use it...

It's hard to tell from afar if it's rancid or not. How long has it been since you opened it? And also what type is it - pomace, extra-virgin, etc?
The less refined the oil, the more "fragrance" it will have. However, if it is a somewhat refined oil with a very strong odor and has been opened for quite some time....I would guess it's turned on you.

it is extra-virgin olive oil and I have had it for a few months. This particular brand always smells stronger than the others I have used.. but this was really bad. I use olive oil as an eye makeup remover as well as cooking, and last night was the first time I have opened it in a few days and YUCK! I am tossing it today...

Hello fellow olive oil lovers! Okay, I'm feeling a little silly at the moment. It's usually recommended to use up olive oil by a month after opening it. Peace
