We've been out in the yard this afternoon (in the snow and rain) helping my dad unload 6 railroad ties for our newest garden! It's going to be like a little slice of heaven! Dimensions of the new garden are approximately 8 x 15 feet. We have to get rid of the sod and in a couple weeks my dad will be hauling in two trailer loads of good black dirt. Our youngest daughter is absolutely beside herself! She is positively giddy with excitement and that really makes grandpa smile. We can't actually plant until early June as we're so far north, but we can dream!

Actually I will need to check in with "She Who Wants to be a Master Gardener" and get back to you! I do know we will have tomatoes, lettuces, peas. I am hoping to add more herbs and I do know Jess wants more FLOWERS, raspberries and strawberries. She also has a lot of heirloom seeds she wants to try this year. One I'm excited about is a particular type of sunflower. I don't recall the name but it is supposed to make an incredible red dye. I'd love to try dyeing some fabric and wool yarn next fall. Just for giggles.

I'm there with you Katie, with your excitement. Mine is mixed with an ever-so-small bit of stress though, because I'm due with #5 in 2 weeks (right around planting time)! So far what I've got in the ground are strawberries, scallions, onions, garlic, peas, carrots, lettace, mustard, spinach, kale, potatoes, and herbs. In the house in little pots, waiting to go out when it doesn't freeze at night anymore are tomatoes, peppers, basil, cabbage, kohlrabi, some fun flowers, and leeks. Then I will plant corn, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and beans, all hopefully before baby comes. Whew! Seems like a lot, but baby steps....

Oh my...you seem to have a LOT of work before the baby arrives! But what a bounty of food you will enjoy this summer and next fall.

Well, Katie, I think that's just *peachy*!!
I keep saying I'm going to try my hand at it, but here in town, I just don't think I want to start too big.
I'm thinking tomatoes in a pot. I've said that for, what, three or four years now? I also thought about cucumbers for pickling. I don't know why, really, it just sounds fun. Do you plant a specific type of cucumbers for pickling?
I also want to grow some herbs, but I think I'll just start small indoors in small pots.
Anyway, some day ----- I'm going to live in the country and plant lots of veggies, have a grape arbor, berries, pecan trees and fruit trees. Someday...
;D

Do it Paula! Turn it into a school project. We had some of our tomatoes in pots last year. It was nice to be able to move them around. Determinate varieties seem to work best. Oooh with the nice warm weather you get down there....I'd be chomping at the bit to have some herbs outside. Just a little patch outside your back door. (I don't even know what your house looks like - I just have a vivd imagination!). I'm a country girl, living in town too.
