I'm thinking about composting. I have lots of information via google about how to do it, but I'm wondering how you all *store* your composting pile?
Do you just throw your stuff into a pile, or did you make some kind of bin, or would a plastic trash can work?
Thank you!

We have ours in a chicken wire and wood post little box thing. (How descriptive is that?) It's just something we made ourselves.
I have read that you can use a plastic trash can or other container. If memory serves, you might have to work with it differently because the plastic would hold heat in more. I think it would need ventilation and you would need access to turn the compost. I'll see if I can find the info I'm referring to and actually give you an intelligent answer!!!

Paula, I looked for the book I referenced, but realized it was a library book that I returned last week. Relying on memory (yikes!)....if you used a plastic container, you'll definitely need to punch holes in it so the compost can breathe. I think it would be hard to turn the compost if you used a traditional can, but haven't actually tried it myself. Worst case scenario, you don't really need to have an enclosure, but it will be a bit messy. Good luck! Katie

Thanks, Katie. I was thinking the same thing about how difficult it would be to turn it and keep it wet and aerated.
I think I've got a solution now. I talked to my mom today and my dad had started one a couple of years ago but didn't keep it going. I'll just start saving my kitchen scraps each week and take them out to their house each weekend when we're there. We'll keep it going that way. It won't be nearly as convenient as having a pile right outside the back door, but it will work out much better in our present situation.
I can't believe I'm excited about compost! ;D
