My 22 mo son had drainage coming out of his ear yesterday. I took him to the dr's and he told me his eardrum has torn. The dr gave him an antibiotic and ear drops... and told me not to worry about it. Have any of you ever dealt with this and is there anything else that I should be doing for him?

First of all DON'T worry. My eardrum burst so many times as a kid that my mom stopped counting...she said she knew that it was more than 8 times and other than short term hearing loss...while it healed...I have perfect hearing....of course everytime the drs look in my ear they make a big deal about the scar tissue...needless to say, I've had to "prove" normal hearing more than once. If you were not doing antibiotics I would suggest garlic...go into the "sick kids at the bettendorfs" post...there is a recipe for a pretty major natural antibiotic tonic. I would also go pretty heavy on Vitamin C...when they are sick I generally give my kids 500 MG every 1/2 hour until they get diarrhea and then back off...so if they get to say 2500 MGs and get diarrhea...then I assume 2000 will be fine for tomorrow...unless they get diarrhea...then back down to 1500 etc...As they get well this number WILL drop but at the height of one of my pretty serious infections (it was gall bladder) I got to 28,000 MGs and never even got close to diarrhea until about 24 hours in and then I backed down. Don't wait until they are miserable...with little kids one loose stool is plenty to start backing off. If you are doing the antibiotics...make sure that you are giving him acidophilus too...it rebuilds the friendly bacteria in his intestine that the chemical antibiotic WILL destroy. Chemical antibiotics kill it all...good and bad...after taking them the immune system is knocked down for quite some time because many of the good immunity cells are made in the intestine...if it's not working up to snuff not as many good immunity cells are made...lowering your immunity. One study I read said that your immune system is LOWEST the 2 weeks AFTER you finish the round of antibiotics...it's one of the reasons if you get one thing...you keep getting stuff over and over again...during the antibiotics...they are killing anything you come into contact with...but once you aren't taking them your body can't fight for a little while. I'll be praying for ya'll.

Thank you so much! What a wealth of information! I must admit that I am very slowly moving into the natural stuff. I have seem the dr's do so many things that I don't agree with. I have started him on acidophilus. To be honest, the idea of having this little guys eat raw garlic just turns my stomach. BUT I do know it is good for them. Do you think it will do any harm if I give it to him with the perscription?

It won't hurt him to take garlic with the antibiotic.

I might whir it up in a blender with ACV or even apple juice or something sweetish and then give it to him in a baby dosage dropper...although my 26 mo grabbed her sister's cup this morning and was licking the inside of it...maybe you'll get lucky and he'll like it.
