After reading about natural cleansers on another site (maybe Dr. Mercola, can't remember) I started using vinegar and peroxide as antibacterial spray cleaner. I filled a squirt bottle full of peroxide and another one with white vinegar. I spray the area with one, wipe it off and then follow-up with the other one and wipe it off. It seems to work fine and it made sense that it would work well. It sure is nice to be able to hand these squirt bottles to the kids and not have to worry about toxic products They are really cheap too! I also started using homemade laundry soap from grated Zote, washing soda and borax. So far, so good! His, Chris

Chris,
I will have to try that spray cleaner. I would love to know about your laundry soap as well? How much of each is required to make a batch, and how big a batch do you make at one time?

Finely grate one bar (Zote or Fels Naptha) of soap into a large bowl, using the finest side of the box grater. Add one cup each of Borax and Arm & Hammer Super Washing soda, mix thoroughly. One batch fits nicely into a quart size canning jar. Use 2-3 T per load of laundry, depending on the size of your washer and how dirty the clothes are. I always use white vinegar in the rinse cycle (1/4) to cut any leftover soap residue.
Zote can be purchased at Super Walmart in the laundry detergent aisle, I believe it can also be found at Dollar General. Arm & Hammer Washing Soda can be found at Publix, make sure it is WashingTEXTSoda and not Baking Soda. An extra bar of Zote or Fels can be kept handy to rub on any stains for a pre-treatment.
His, Chris

i did the homemade soap for a while, but before i went through the whole batch, i noticed my whites were really getting dingy and all my colors were just not the same...sorta dingy too. As soon as i went back to my regular, it fixed the problem, i am wondering if my "recipe" was off.

I *think* the dingyness is caused by the grated bar soap. Did you use vinegar in the rinse Samantha? That seemed to make a difference for me. Also, I cut the amount of bar soap and increased the borax/washing soda. Borax seems to make my whites quite white and the colors vibrant.
One other thing about a homemade laundry soap...you won't get all the suds like with a regular detergent.

do you know where i live you can NOT find things like fels naptha or washing soda? occassionally you can find borax, but it has to be the right store at the right time. i absolutely love fels naptha..but not worth it to drive an hr away to buy it..and only one store sells it an hr away and they say they are almost always sold out.
