I'm Lisa... hs'ing mom to 5.
I've been wanting to learn more about eating healthier. DaisyMama from the shed gave me the link for this board.
I was somewhat into the healthy eating thing awhile ago and got away from it. I have a Whisper Mill which I'm starting to put back into use.
I had a scare back in May. I ended up in the emergency room with breathing trouble. It turns out I have asthma (never had allergies/asthma before). Anyway, at the time I didn't know if I was having a heart attack or what. It just got me thinking about how poorly I've been caring for my body (and about my family's health).
I'm baby stepping my way to getting my family healthy. I'm starting by educating myself about sweetners, grains and fats. Pretty much in that order for now. Sugar is a major problem here. It's every where!
I'm am thankful that my dc love from scratch cooking! Pancakes made with whole wheat and oatmeal, homemade whole wheat bread, etc... They ask for it! So it shouldn't take too much adjusting for them.
They were so excited just a little bit ago when I pulled a couple of carrots from the garden. I washed the dirt off and they gobbled them up!
Sugar may be a problem though.
I live in an area with lots of amish/mennonites so there are lots of sources for whole grains and fresh produce at very fair prices. I just checked out an amish farm store today about 10-15 min from my house. They've got all sorts of grains for grinding, raw sugar, sucanat, etc, etc... I'm thankful to have such easy access to this stuff! I get my raw milk from a local farm as well as farm fresh eggs. The raw milk is less than 1/2 the cost than store bought milk! Just an added bonus for using raw milk! ;D I know the dairy farmer doesn't use hormones and stuff. I've gotten to know the lady I buy most of my produce from so I feel I can trust the source for quality produce!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning from you all!
