I have a few questions for you fellow moms. Do any of you with diabetes, have children who are affected with the disease? What are the warning signs for a child? I had gest. diab. with both pregnancies. The first, I controlled with diet, the last one I ended up on insulin. I do not have diabetes.. but I am sugar sensitive.. I always have been... they called it reactive hypoglycemia. But Topher, my youngest, seems very edgy.. and if I give him straight juice or fruit or even a smartie candy, he immediately perks right up and it lasts for another 2 hours. Is this a paranoid momma thing or something that I should talk to the ped about?

My ds has type 1--insulin dependent, he was diagnosed at age 5. He had all the symptoms--excessive hunger, excessive thirst, weight loss, excessive urination--we would have to stop at least three times just to get across town, his personality changed in that he didn't seem like he could mind anymore--in actuality he couldn't process simple information because his brain was literally starving. When I called his ped. to convey my fears, they had me bring him in immediately. They did a urine test right in the office, then sent us down the hall for a blood draw. His blood sugar was nearly 600--which can cause strokes in adults if nothing is done. If you even suspect this, you need to take him in and have him tested. This is nothing to play with. Oh, and I do not have diabetes and neither does my dh, but we have alot of extended family members who do. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate. Good luck and please let us know how it goes. I will be praying for you. Liz

Thank you so much for your insight. I have made an appointment to see the dr in the morning. I will let you know what happens.

ok.. we just got back from the dr's. He tested his sugar and it was only 115, very normal for a toddler who just finished his breakfast and apple juice. He also told me that with his symptoms, he is probably more inclined to be hypoglycemic. The dr said that most kids usually present aroun 5 or 6 and that my Topher is a little young.. also to just keep an eye on it. He has to go for an overnight eeg in a few weeks, and they will be doing a blood draw then.. and they will test his amino acids and glycemic something or other at the same time... so.. he is fine for now.. just my Topher...

Ohh That is good news. I am very happy for you. By the way, why does he need an eeg? Liz

he has autism and we went to see the neurologist on wed. because he had some language and lost it at 14-15 months... and he also has had seizures, he wants to rule out landau-kleffner syndrome. his brother went through this a little over a year ago and it was negative, so I don't expect anything different.. but it is better to rule it out..
