Okay, I did a DUMB thing today...
I had a large slushie!!
We had been at the midwife and it's about a 1 hour drive home, so I stopped at a sonic burger and got my kids a lemonaide (it's their treat for being good they can't have the lollipops because of the colors and they never have anything but water at home)...well Sonic has these delicious orange cream slushie things that I used to just love and I thought...oh well, whatever I'm having one.
So I'm driving along and I'm sipping my slushie and as I start getting close, say maybe 45 min into the drive, 10-15 minutes from home I started getting sleepy.
I got home, turned on the TV and napped while my kids watched a video...then I got up...felt really woosy...drank some water...made my kids lunch and looked up diabetes in my handy dandy book. It had stuff for both high and low sugar and then l-glutamine and bilberry for stablizing sugar...I took a couple of those and some more water and within just a little while was feeling better.
Okay...so which was it...was it high or low? That I'm aware of I'm not actually diabetic, BUT I don't want to take the GTT until it is just me in here (baby is due June 26)...but I would like to know your experiences. What do you feel like when you are high vs when you are low? Can you tell before you check your blood sugar?
Thanks.

sounds like a crash to me. most likely you probably spiked on the sugar, then it came down fast. they call that reactive hypogycemia. i had that before i got pg with #2,completely diet controlled. dont eat fruits or sugars alone, always with a protein, is basically what i was told.
as for what highs and lows feel like. i dont feel the highs, as much as i do the lows. but the highs after awhile i start feeling cranky and tired, thirsty too. lows i feel cranky and get a headache, tired too. if my sugars go high then low pretty quick, my chest hurts, but thats not common.
i wish you lived close to me, i could test your sugars for you and see where you are sitting. do you know anyone around you that has a glucose monitor that can check your sugars for you occassionaly?

I've been trying to decide if I want to invest in one myself...but they are pretty pricey.
I've done a little bit of reading on reactive hypoglycemia, actually Elizabeth at the shed was telling me that she had it...and I agree that is probably what I am.
From what I can see on the glucose monitors...the cheaper ones are itty bitty...flash I think they are called...are they still okay...and the strips seem expensive too...but I haven't looked too far into it.
Any suggestions?

check your insurance. if you can get your dr to prescribe you one then most insurances will cover them. mine i bought, and then sent the receipt to the insurance and they reimbursed me. my dr writes me a prescription for my strips (they also cover lancets and alcohol wipes...but after co pay im still paying the same amount). yep they are expensive. i have the lifescan ultrasmart one. i had just a fasttake one, but went to a clinic and the dietician gave me the upgrade which is the ultrasmart heres the link www.lifescan.com/products/meters/ultrasmart/ ..it usually sells for $85. i know the strips are usually $65 for 50 strips, but insurance pays so i only pay $25 for 150 strips. i love this one because i plug it into my computer and just upload and print what the dr needs. dr likes it too. she thoght i was really organized lol. you might also see if your dr/midwife has one you can borrow, or can help you out in finding one. i first gotone back when i was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia.
