I have used Mary Kay regularly now since before I was married (so, about 15 years). I have always liked it, and have only taken a "detour" to a few department store brands (Clinique and Lancome) during a time when I couldn't find a MK consultant and was working full time and could afford it. I have used MK exclusively now for the last 7 years solidly atleast.
However, I have become so frustrated with my skin changing (I think it's a mid-30's thing, or a post 3rd baby thing...) and I have to find something else. I am checking into Katie's soaps, but I just have no idea where to start navgating the sea of natural moisturizers and cosmetics!! I have a wonderful health store that has a very nice selection - but they are all very pricey. I just don't want to spend the money to find out it didn't work well. There is just too much on the internet to know where to start.
My skin has all of the sudden become EXTREMELY break-out prone, and very "normal" (not really oily, not really dry).
Do any of you have suggestions on where to start investigating options or what brands are good?

Shauna, I have no idea what cosmetics are good for you as I havent researched those at all. I do know that particular industry is somewhat loosely regulated. I'm surprised at some of the ingredients. You might start by jotting down ingredients and looking those up online to determine if it is something you want to put on your face or not. I'm not too much of a make-up gal myself. Usually my face is "bare".
As far as a moisturizer....I encourage people to just try using a straight oil when extra moisturizing is needed. No frills, no chemicals or funky stuff. Oils that are particularly skin friendly include: virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, monoi de tahiti, even a dab of olive oil will work in a pinch. For me, those oils do double duty and also function as a hair conditioner. (I have wild long hair.)
Hugs from the resident oil freak! Katie

Your skin could be changing with your diet also. Remember that breakouts are 6 weeks out, so you may be detoxing right now.............

Tina - I had not even thought about detoxing.... I know nothing about detoxing. I have also stepped up my walking considerably - I know walk 5 or 6 miles at a time. I know that exercise can cause all the toxins to come out through your sweat (a good thing!), but I would think this would be clearing up my face - as the impurities would be leaving my skin??
I should mention that I am within 5 years of my mother's, grandmother's and great-grandmother's onset of menopause... so I assumed that it was a hormonal thing.

Shauna, I, too, have been a loyal MK users for more than 10 years now. Mainly because it was the only brand I could find that didn't burn or break out my skin. I have loved it for so long, and then they changed over to timewise, which I did not like at all. And I have spent countless hours trying to track down the purifying bar only to have my hormones change and not be able to use it anymore! It seems like all of this has happened since I turned 30. Is that some magical hormonal number that I have not been aware of? Anyways, I have been using Katie's lavender soap for about 2 months (I think) and I love it. It isn't like some of the other natural soaps out there that do not lather up or they leave an icky film. (You go Katie!) The only breakouts I have had are a few AF reminders. KWIM? My skin seems smoother too and it doesn't burn any more. Whew!! As far as moisturizers and cosmetics go, I am on this journey with you my friend! I recently ordered a mess of samples from www.jlynnecosmetics.com. I love the colors and the textures (it is a mineral powder kind of makeup) but today I put on a "full face" of the makeup and it is burning sssooooo bad that I am going to wash my face off in a minute! So I will keep you posted as to what I am trying.. will you do the same? Happy hunting!!! Cherise

I'm glad to know that about the jlynn cosemetics, I had considered ordering samples of those. I'm going to get with Katie about her lavender soap! (Katie, I'll pm you!) I think that if I can get my skin care under control, that maybe I can still use the MK color cosmetics. I do really like them. I did well with the original TimeWise, but since they have changed the TimeWise formulas completely, I'm not doing well with the new ones.

I have also been a faithful MK user, even a consultant in the past, but am trying to make the change to more natural cosmetics, which are very hard to find (good ones, that is). I am currently using Aveda, which is mostly natural and organic, but I haven't checked out every ingredient yet. They, too, are very pricey, even higher than MK! However, I have decided that it is worth it. I actually love the Aveda products' results, but some of them smell . . . well, natural! (I don't care for most "natural" fragrances!) You can check them out at Dillards at the Citrus Park Mall (where there is great customer service) or at aveda.com. Aveda is the first natural cosmetic company whose products actually can compare to the quality of Mary Kay. Hope this helps! ~Cindy

The only oil listed in my moisturizer's ingredients is "Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil from Mixed Plants." My other products are oil free. I know they are not all organic or 100% natural, but that the company strives to make a quality product from mostly natural ingredients. BTW, I didn't get on the site for the past month with my mom in town. Sorry my reply was so delayed!!!
