Hi Tina, Can you help me get my brain around this? I'm thinking of doing ph tests tomorrow - just happen to have ph testing stuff around the house. I'm guessing my dh will test quite acidic...he's on several different meds (cardiac related). Is it a reasonable assumption that he may "never" test alkaline as long as he's taking these? On the other hand, this guy drinks coffee like it's going out of style.... So it is reasonable to say that pH testing would be "off" for him? If yes, would the underlying task then be to create a balance with the acids/alkalines??? Going a little heavier on the alkalines?

Katie, You want to start very slowly with changing over to alkaline . The meds should not affect his test at all.
In order to get an accurate test , you want to all be sure to eat high protein foods tonight. Pasta, with meat sauce and bread etc. Then test in the morning.
The reason I said to start with fruit in the morning as your first change is that it is quickly digested and makes more energy than it takes to digest and also has a detoxing effect on the body.
Coffe is extremely acid . The problem with just increasing the alkaline foods is that the acid is still putting a load on his body.
The effects of not having enough alkaline in your system is this:
The body has to use the natural sodium in the alkaline producing fruits and veggies to neutralize the acid in the acid producing foods. If there is none there in reserve it will use calcium instead. The calcium gets pulled from the bones.
So, what he really needs to do is decrease the coffee and increase the alkaline veggies.
If I may reccommend a wonderful book that would even be understood by your girls. Dr Fells Know it All Guide to Health and Wellness is all about the acid/alkaline balance.
I hope I answered everything. If not, ask me more questions.

I wanted to add that if he tests alkaline it does not mean he is healthy which you have indicated he's not eating well. It means that as a last ditch effort to save itself, his body has gone into survival mode and begun producing ammonia to neutralize the acid. You will see the proof in this as he begins to build his alkaline reserve and his ph bottoms out and then does and acid spike and comes down to normal. www.thewolfeclinic.com/acidalkfoods.htmlThe links at the bottom of this food list should give you more information

Actually, he eats very well - probably the best of all of us. He already starts his day with fruit - he has all his life - it's what he likes best. Coffee is his beverage of choice, personally I think he drinks Way Too Much coffee.
Ok, I must have misread the lists...I was thinking coffee was on the alkaline side and his rx's would increase acidity. Off to re-read.

Hmm...the wheels are still turning here. I personally drink a few cups of coffee a day. It is likely I don't get enough calcium (hate milk). So in re-reading your post, my body is probably pulling calcium to neutralize acid...not good. Esp since I already have some risk factors for osteo...thin frame, small bones, family history.
Hmmm...lots to think about.

Unless you drink raw milk you would not get calcium from it anyway due to the way they process the milk now . I will post a lemon egg recipe that you can take for 30 days to boost your calcium. I feel that is better than calcium supplements.
Have you tried switching to herbal teas instead of coffee? It worked for me.

They make a lot of good teas now that you may like. My mom has gotten quite a few from our food co-op and I think that they would be a good subsitute for those who love coffee.

Has he tried dandelion root coffee, chicory root coffee... You must be able to get some sort of substitute like this. I know we can, but that doesn't necessarily help you! Dandelions are generally weeds most places though I suppose the barley based subs. would still be acid?

I love tea, so that's not a problem for me. DH though is very much addicted to his java. He's not to keen on tea. I did mention once about dandelion root as a substitute and he looked at me as if I'd gone mad. I don't know why, but I get that look a lot! ;D
